Genealogy and Ancestry
"We are the children of many sires,
and every drop of blood in us in its
turn ... betrays its ancestor." Ralph Waldo Emerson
Genealogy is the #1 hobby on the Internet and is becoming a passion for millions of people around the world. Genealogical information can be collaborated with others, and you can watch your family trees grow.
You want to collect and collate as much information as you can. It is most exciting to start with your self and then turn toward the other members of your present generation. Then you progress by researching
previous generations like Father and Mother, then step up one level at a time. Keep digging and researching to reach the possible root of your family tree.
The word genealogy is derived from the Greek, and means the study of family history. The recorded histories of the descent of a person or family from their ancestors, are also often referred to as family
trees or sometimes as lineages.
If you think of a family tree as being a triangle, you would be the point at the top. An individual will usually have: You Two parents
Four grandparents Eight great-grandparents Sixteen great-great-grandparents
From you at the top, working downward, these form an ancestral pyramid. When you have gone back ten generations you have an impressive 1,024 ancestors, enough genealogy to keep you busy researching for a lifetime!
When just beginning your family genealogy research, printed sources can be overwhelming and confusing. Being the ever-increasing amount of new materials it often proves difficult for even the professional researcher. |
